Punctuation Marks ( विरामचिन्हे )


Capitalization : (मोठया अक्षराचा नियम )

English sentence begins with capital letter. (वाक्याच्या सुरूवातीचे अक्षर नेहमी कॅपिटल लिहावे.)

For Example:  My school is very nice.

Pronoun 'I' is always capital. ( I हे सर्वनाम वाक्यात कोठेही आल्यास ते कॅपिटल लिहावे.)

For Example:  My, I come in sir ?

Proper noun starts with cpital letter. (विशेषनामाचे पहिले अक्षर कॅपिटल लिहावे. )

For Example : Gopal, Seeta, Heena, John, Rohan etc.

Name of city, Village starts with capital letter.

For example :  Pune, Nasik, Kolhapur etc.

Names of river, mountains, countries, start with capital letters.

For example :   Ganga, Himalaya, India  etc.

 

Comma ( स्वल्पविराम )   ( , ) :

Comma is placed between word in a series and between two phrases/sentences.

For example:  I like mangoes, bananas, oranges and grapes.

For example:  Ram, Sham and Suraj are playing cricket.

 

Full stop ( पूर्णविराम)  ( . )  

Full stop is used to end a sentence. It is also used in abbreviations of names, patterns and degrees.

For example : 1) I go to school   2) a.m./ p.m. / B.A. / B. Com. / B. Sc.

 

Question Mark ( प्रश्नचिन्ह )  ( ? )     

Question mark is used at the end of questioning sentence. ( What, Where, Which, When, Who, Whom, Whose, How )

For example: What is your name?    

For example: May I come in sir?

 

Apostrophe (षष्टीदर्शक चिन्ह )   ( ' ) 

Apostrophe is used to indicate possession.

For example:  Raju's pencil, Meena's doll.

It is also used in contracted forms.

For example:  don't, isn't, won't etc.

 

Exclamation mark ( उदगारार्थी चिन्ह )  ( ! )

Exclamation mark is used to indicate intense feelings.

For example:  1) Oh!  What a great idea!  2)  What a beautiful garden!  3) How sweet!
